I CAN SEE INTO THE FUTURE

‘It Was An Inferno. Before I Realised What Was Happening, The Whole Wall Went Up!’

As the world moves to collecting energy at its point of use, it is worth investigating what could happen when things go wrong. Home-sized lithium batteries make solar viable, collecting energy during the day and storing it for use at night in batteries. What could possibly go wrong when you bolt a battery to your most expensive asset?

GREECE NEEDS TO ...

Greece needs to start charging full retail.

Greece needs to recognise that it’s a six-month country. Just like Mt.Buller, Falls Creek and any other snowfield,
(until mountain biking came along), the Greek Islands only work half the year, during the summer. It's tourists have to start paying full retail. Read More…

RIOTS IN ATHENS

It's Christmas, it's Athens. There's always a riot.

Every year, after a few months of cold weather, and a couple of months since work on the islands ceased, the boys get frustrated and angry. Riots in Athens have become an annual pre-Christmas event. The fix is a creative plan to keep people employed all year —and come up with a plan to use that trained manpower over winter. Read More…

AUSTRALIA'S AVIATION FUTURE

So, who would be a pilot in the future?

Pilot salaries and conditions have been steadily declining for years, which is why they have been flooding the Middle Eastern airlines that continue to pay higher wages in tax-free environments. Here's what we need to do to retain the talent.

TAKEOFF “TOGA” CALL

Not happy? Call "TOGA!"

We should have a standard call in all aeroplanes for takeoff.

“TOGA” (It means Takeoff / Go Around)

Upon hearing it, from anyone on the flight deck ... even an augmenting pilot looking out the side window and noticing the runway lights are not speeding-up at the right rate ... just yells “TOGA!” and the operating pilot selects the full power settings.

Instant power, and ask questions later.

UNDERGROUND SHARKS

You should pay for what you get.

When a tunnel company charges you full retail to drive across the city using their tunnel, shouldn't they give you a discount when the speed is reduced, or the number of lanes available?

Three lanes at 80kph = full retail.

Two lanes at 40 kph = a fair percentage less.

REALISTIC ROAD SIGNS

Show it like it is

On one of Melbourne's private toll roads, there is an ever-tightening 270 degree corner, before traffic crosses the Bolte Bridge, northbound.

Shouldn’t the road's owners be expected to place a road sign indicating an upcoming corner that is commensurate with reality, rather than a standard, off the shelf, 'road curves' sign?

Two trucks have come to grief. Do their owners' lawyers have a case?

SMOKING VICTIMS

In Australia, we have banned smoking advertising.

As a result, all our scratched and faded hoardings and outdoor umbrellas have been sent to nearby third world island nations like Vanuatu and Tonga.

AUSTRALIA'S IDEAL POPULATION

It's all been done before

Melbourne identity Steve Vizard rightly raises Australia’s population issue. This author is not against the concept of either raising public debate, or Mr.Vizard - who was recently described by an ABC talkback caller as ‘the thinking man’s Eddie McGuire’.

But when is a journalist or editor going to pick up on these two points:
1. This is a national issue, so why is a State Premier pushing it instead of handing it to the federal head of his party?
2. It has all been done before by Barry Jones’
Committee Investigating Sustainable Development which included many wise people and was science-based. Read More…

REAL TIME 3D DESKTOP VIDEO CONFERENCING

Aircraft manufacturers should own this new technology The aviation industry has been decimated, tourism flattened by 9/11. Airport throughput times blown-out because of 100% security screening. The USA policy of sterile flight decks has proven flawed.

Airports that have mistakenly imagined themselves as shopping centres are in for a shock.
Business travel needs a quantum leap. The last one was the birth of the 747 and Concorde generations ago ...
Perhaps the next quantum leap is nowhere near the airport. Coming instead in the form of upgraded video conferencing.
